Baby planning: Low sperm count

The term sperm is derived from the Greek word sperma meaning "seed" and refers to the male reproductive cells.

A sperm test is carried out to determine the number of sperm per ml of ejaculate. A count of below 20 million sperm per ml of semen is a low sperm count and may need to be treated as it reduces a man's fertility and may affect your chances of conception.

Simple treatment of low sperm count could be wearing looser underwear and reducing the intake of cigarettes and alcohol.

If the low sperm count is due to some other medical problems, then a procedure called ICSI (Intra Cystoplasmic Sperm Injection) may be used to fertilise the egg using a single sperm. If all else fails, then donor insemination may be another option worth looking into.
